John Dickson Carr (1906–1977) was an American author best known for his complex locked-room mysteries and for characters such as Dr. Gideon Fell. He also published under the pseudonym Carter Dickson.

Renowned for constructing elaborate locked-room puzzles; his novel The Hollow Man (also published as The Three Coffins / Le Tre Bare) is widely regarded as a classic of the form.
