John Coltrane Quartet

Musical Group

The John Coltrane Quartet was the classic group led by saxophonist John Coltrane, featuring McCoy Tyner (piano), Elvin Jones (drums) and Jimmy Garrison (double bass). They are best known for albums such as A Love Supreme (1965).

A Love Supreme (Impulse!, 1965) is a four-part suite with strong spiritual intent; Coltrane wrote in the liner notes about a 1957 spiritual awakening and his gratitude. Coltrane struggled with heroin addiction in the late 1950s and overcame it. John Coltrane died July 17, 1967, of liver cancer.

The available review praises A Love Supreme as an essential jazz album and describes its four-part suite and spiritual intent. It highlights the classic quartet personnel: John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison. The review links the work to Coltrane's recovery from heroin and to its 1965 Impulse! release.

For:Jazz newcomers and longtime fans interested in Coltrane's classic quartet and A Love Supreme.

«During the year 1957, I experienced, by the grace of God, a spiritual awakening that was to lead me to a richer, fuller, more productive life. At that time, out of gratitude, I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music. I feel this has been granted to me by His grace. All praise to God.»
