John Cale & Terry Riley

Musical Group

A collaboration between Welsh musician John Cale (formerly of the Velvet Underground) and American minimalist composer Terry Riley; they released the album The Church Of Anthrax (1971), which blends minimalism, rock and psychedelic elements.

John Cale is a Welsh multi-instrumentalist and former member of the Velvet Underground. Terry Riley is an American composer associated with musical minimalism and author of A Rainbow in Curved Air. The collaboration album The Church Of Anthrax features instruments mentioned in reviews (viola, harpsichord, piano, sax) and includes tracks titled "The Church Of Anthrax", "The Soul Of Patrick Lee" and "Ides Of March". The review notes production disagreements attributed to Cale's role as executive producer.

A mixed but appreciative assessment of the Cale–Riley collaboration. The review praises the blend of Riley's minimalism and Cale's rock/avant-garde touch and highlights the title track, 'The Soul Of Patrick Lee' and 'Ides Of March'. It notes production choices and a sense that the concept was only partially realised.

For:Fans of experimental rock, minimalism, psychedelic and 1970s avant-garde music.

A composer who is now eighty years young and is part of the minimalist movement, which had its heyday with John Cage, Philip Glass & LaMonte Young.
