In April 2007, the third album by the former Marilyn Manson member, John 5, was released.
This album is called "The Devil Knows My Name" and it's one of my favorite albums (in my opinion) from his career. The genre of this completely instrumental CD is a mix of metal and country....????
No, it's not a joke, that's really how it is. In this album, Metal tracks alternate with Country tracks, as in all the solo albums of this "peculiar" guitarist: a somewhat strange union that can surprise the listener.
There are many collaborations in this album with well-known guitarists in the guitar world. Jim Root (Slipknot guitarist) in "Black Widow of La Porte", in "The Werewolf of Westeria" we have Joe Satriani, and in "The Washing Away of Wrong" there's the collaboration of Eric Johnson.
The aforementioned tracks are the best in the album (my favorite being "Black Widow Of La Porte") and they are all focused on the metal/heavy genre.
As the sixth track, we have a cover of Guns N' Roses: "Welcome To The Jungle" completely revisited with the guitar, playing both the original guitar part and the original vocal part with the guitar.
Let's move on to the tracks that showcase the Country genre. In this album, as I previously mentioned, there are two genres, but the Country stands out less. In fact, there are only two tracks that come close to this genre: "Bella Kiss" and "Young Thing" (cover by Chet Atkins).
The last track of the album is "July 31st", which, besides having an atmosphere that is particularly dark, explodes at certain points with very violent and compelling solos that "cut" through this gloomy atmosphere.
The two Intros: "First Victim" and "Harold Rolling Hymn" are not much appreciated by me since they have little to do with the thread of the album.
- "First Victim"
- "The Werewolf of Westeria"
- "27 Needles"
- "Bella Kiss"
- "Black Widow of La Porte"
- "Welcome To The Jungle"
- "Harold Rollings Hymn"
- "Dead Art in Plainfield"
- "Young Thing - 3:04"
- "The Washing Away of Wrong"
- "July 31st (The Last Stand)"
