Johann Sebastian Bach - Hilliard Ensemble - Christoph Poppen

Musical Group or Musician

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a German Baroque composer. The Hilliard Ensemble is a British vocal ensemble known for early and contemporary repertoire. Christoph Poppen is a German violinist and conductor.

The album Morimur (ECM/Manfred Eicher is mentioned in reviews) was conceived from Helga Thoene's hypothesis that Bach embedded chorales in the Chaconne of the Partita in D minor (BWV 1008). The recording alternates solo violin performances of the Partita with chamber renditions of chorales and includes a vocalized version of the Chaconne by the Hilliard Ensemble layered with Christoph Poppen's violin, producing an intellectually driven and unusual listening experience.

The album Morimur explores Helga Thoene's theory that Bach embedded chorales in the Chaconne (Partita BWV 1008). Christoph Poppen's violin solos alternate with Hilliard Ensemble renditions of chorales, and voices overlay the Chaconne. The result is intellectually fascinating but may limit immediate emotional enjoyment.

For:Classical music listeners, early-music and Baroque enthusiasts, musicologists and fans of vocal-instrumental experimentation.
