THE REVIEW

"In New Orleans, you can almost glimpse other dimensions. Here, time happens only one day at a time, then evening comes and tomorrow will be today again."
(Bob Dylan - Chronicles vol. 1)

When Joseph Lee Henry was writing and playing records that had the Dylanian flavor and were nourished by the sweet breezes of New Orleans and Nashville, when his music was haunted by the ghost of Gram Parsons, when his music had not yet fallen under the enchantments of the surreal magic of Bunuel's films, when it had not yet gotten entangled in the frames of Fellini's masterpieces or happily lost in a flaming vision of Richard Pryor, when his music was not yet played by sacred monsters like Ornette Coleman or superb guitarists like Marc Ribot, when his music was all this and not many other things, it was 1993, and he released Kindness Of the World, an album of 12 powerful songs, 12 fiery songs forged in the most traditional country and characterized by beautiful and comforting lyrics.
The first song One Day When The Weather Is Warm is a painting of spectacular beauty, a timeless ballad that takes your breath away! The other songs are certainly no less, the beautiful Fireman's Wedding, the Parsonian She Always Goes, the title track (sung with Victoria Williams; it seems straight out of Griveous Angel!) and Buckdancer's Choice, the wonderful cover of Tom T. Hall's classic I Flew Over Our House Last Night and all the others...
Intense music, springing from some window opened to the past, Kindness of The World was recorded in New Orleans at Daniel Lanois' studio, the same places that saw the birth of another magical masterpiece a few years earlier: the enchanting Oh Mercy by Bob Dylan!...
It seems that the city is haunted by ghosts, specters floating suspended in time, with voices like bells!

Tonight I Feel I'm floating
For minutes at a times
Just listen to the bells
And trusting in the kindness of the world.
