Well, after several months, I'm back! It had been a long time since I last wrote about Joe Cocker.
HYMN FOR MY SOUL.
JOE Cocker is back with a 100% SOUL album. He is reaching the pinnacle of his career more as a man than as a singer. Every track is a reflection. The last one, which also gives the album its title, is perhaps the only one I would have considered a BONUS TRACK.
Tracks like "ONE WORD (Peace)" and "JUST PASS IT ON", are tracks with a decidedly soul character. Tracks that Marvin Gaye could have easily recorded. Tracks like "LONG AS I SEE THE LIGHT" and "RING THEM BELLS", are instead sad but at the same time full of emotion. Tracks that I believe only now the old Lion of Sheffield could have recorded.
Today, the man seems tired, but not of expressing his own emotion. After sixty years, he has finally achieved the musical maturity he didn't have before. Before, he was appreciated for other qualities, such as grit and passion; now it is the emotion and the desire to convey a feeling to those who want to listen that stand out.
I conclude by saying that I haven't talked about each track individually, but rather about what this album has been able to convey. A reissue came out a few months ago for two reasons: one, the demand, and two, the need to introduce an extra track such as "Come Together", the famous Beatles song recorded specifically for the beautiful movie "Across the Universe" where Joe makes three small appearances during this song. Truly, a particular version, an overwhelming emotion,
different from the entire album, but still very appreciated!!!
Ps. A few months ago, a DVD was also released, containing 2 Joe Cocker concerts from 1980 and 1983. Naturally, everyone who loves Joe and knows him understands that he is a true stage animal... it made more sense to publish concerts where he performed his best. Beautiful and I recommend it to everyone!
Go Joe!!!
You still have so much to give us....
