THE REVIEW

The changes could already be sensed while listening to the last album, "Futures," where Jimmy Eat World were already beginning to distance themselves from emocore, a genre that they themselves were pioneers of, but whose boundaries probably now feel too constrained for Jim Adkins and company.

The differences between the old JEW and today’s are even more pronounced after listening to this "Stay On My Side Tonight," a 5-track EP released at the end of last year, preceding the new album, likely due out this winter. The band has practically set emo aside definitively, shaping their style towards more alternative rock; moreover, all tracks on this work are imbued with a very melancholic atmosphere, especially the track that opens the EP, the marvelous ballad "Disintegration," a 7-minute and 40-second poem; undoubtedly the best track on the record. It continues with "Over," the track that, of all, comes closest to the old JEW, and the only song within the EP to have a more sustained rhythm. The subsequent "Closer" brings back the mellow atmosphere of "Disintegration," despite a very intense ending with prominently featured guitar outbursts.

"Half Right" is a cover of Heatmiser: I am not familiar with the original, but the JEW cover is truly beautiful, an almost folk ballad; finally, the only track that left me a little puzzled, the remix of the beautiful "Drugs Or Me," present in "Futures": as delicate and enveloping as the original was, this version is literally "suffocated" by a frenzy of electronic sounds. The only truly negligible track. This EP undoubtedly heralds major changes in the Jimmy Eat World camp. At this point, there's nothing left but to wait for the new album, about whose release, however, there are still no certain news.

It is certain, however, that the group made famous by "Clarity" and, above all, by "Bleed American" has embarked on an incredibly interesting maturation process; and, for this, one can only be happy.

Summary by Bot

The review highlights Jimmy Eat World’s shift from emocore to a more alternative rock sound in their 'Stay On My Side Tonight' EP. The melancholic tone dominates the 5-track release, especially in 'Disintegration.' While most tracks impress, the remix of 'Drugs Or Me' is less favored. The band’s maturation process is praised, anticipating their upcoming album.

Tracklist Lyrics

01   Disintegration (07:44)

I've spent my last nights
strung up and pulled tight.
Holding out, sleep and grow.
An answer comes without a please:
'Do what you want.'

[Chorus:]
Wonder why I'm so caught of guard when we kiss.
Rather live my life in regret then do this.
What happened to the love we both knew?
We both chased.
Hanging on a cigarette you need me,
you burn me you'll burn me.

Hushed with a finger
Don't say you'll never when you might,
or just another time.
This poison comes instruction free.
Do what you want, but I'm drinking.

Wonder why I'm so caught off guard when we kiss.
Rather live my life in regret then do this.
What happened to the love we both knew?
We both chased.
Hanging on a cigarette you need me,
you burn me you'll burn me.

Lie lie better next time, stay on my side tonight oh
Lie lie better next time, stay on my side tonight oh
Lie lie better next time, stay on my side tonight oh
Lie lie better next time, stay on my side tonight oh
Lie lie better next time, stay on my side tonight oh
Lie lie better next time, stay on my side tonight oh
Lie lie better next time, stay on my side tonight oh
Lie lie better next time, stay on my side tonight oh [continues through chorus]

Wonder why I'm so caught of guard when we kiss
I'd rather live my life in regret than do this
What happened to the love we both knew, we both chased
Hanging on a cigarette you need me you burn me you'll burn me
What happened to the love we both knew, we both chased
Hanging on a cigarette you need me you burn me you'll burn me.
