James Marshall Hendrix was born in Seattle on November 27, 1942.

He died in London on September 18, 1970

He changed his name to Jimi Hendrix and from there he founded the celebrated Hendrix Experience.

He was part of the rock scene in the '60s and is still remembered in common opinion as well as by top music critics as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, if not the greatest.

37 years after his death, he is still at the top of the rankings of the best guitarists that ever existed.

But has Hendrix been surpassed today?

Is it possible that in 40 years no one has even managed to equal the greatness of the most famous guitarist of all time?

In my humble opinion, yes.

In fact, I believe that Hendrix is still at the top of the lists just because he IS Jimi Hendrix, not so much because he played better than everyone else.

In the common opinion, Jimi is remembered for having burned his guitar as a symbol of American capitalism, but not everyone today remembers the greatness of "Purple Haze".

So why?

Today we continually witness phenomena the likes of Buckethead, who started as a jazz guitarist and in my opinion, has far surpassed the Hendrix phenomenon.

Not to mention greats like Steve Vai or John Petrucci, who do not limit themselves to progressions on the fretboard, otherwise, Petrucci himself would not have become the leader of the most technical band in the world.

To conclude this commentary (which upon reading seems quite senseless, but I'll publish it anyway), I would conclude by saying that?

Yes, he has been surpassed.
