Increasingly fascinated by the ecstatic and melancholic sounds of Shoegaze, Justin Broadrick in his project named Jesu, has showcased an intense and reflective Ambient-Rock, far from the dark, obsessive, and "industrial" rhythms of Godflesh, leaving only a faded memory of his former band's sound in the basic experimentation of the self-titled 2005 LP, a fundamental chapter in his career, where the guitars undergo a sort of mutation and transition of his music, a disorientation in the listener's mind that renders the sound of the guitars both sharp and dreamy at the same time, bordering on Post-Rock composition.
In recent years, good Justin has dedicated himself to the publication of various EPs, a brief and highly appreciable format, that often proves to be apt and effective for artists, allowing them to measure their ideas, avoiding possible forms of prolixity in a hypothetical album.
"Why Are We Not Perfect?" is one of them, initially released in 2007 in a Split with Eluvium in vinyl format for Temporary Residence and the following year with only the Jesu tracks including two alternative versions of two of the already contained tracks, for Hydra Head.
The most melodic, direct, and above all simple of Broadrick's works, it is difficult to assert that any of his works contain three actual "songs," but this is the closest case to being able to say so. "Farewell," "Blind And Faithless," and the Title Track completely baffle longtime fans, three songs of pure crystalline beauty that make you want to listen to them repeatedly, to be considered as a unique triptych, among dreamy suggestions in Slowdive-style with timid and sweet percussions in the background, seasoned with the right dose of electronics all within a resigned poetry that somewhat represents the mood of post-modernity. From the anger of his early days to now, many years have passed for the genius from Birmingham, to the point of wondering in a subdued and melancholic tone why we are not perfect...
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
01 Farewell (06:32)
I just can't be it
leave me behind
I don't want to go with you
unless they go
but they won't
they're far too inwards to understand
situations out of hand
but they know
there's no answer
I can't do what they all
want you to do
so now
we'll lose
everything we start to keep
for our lives
their hands
I don't see that
they will change for you
and your good will
they take what they can
for themselves own ends
believe
a victim
a last farewell and we shall run
and we shall run
and we shall run
and we shall run
and we shall run
and we shall run
