The Profile

Jean Ray (born in Ghent, Belgium, 1887–1964) was a leading author of European weird and gothic fiction, also writing as John Flanders. He is best known for Malpertuis and the early collection Les Contes du Whisky (I racconti del whisky). He also penned numerous Harry Dickson adventures.

Malpertuis was adapted for film by Harry Kümel with Orson Welles. Les Contes du Whisky appeared in 1925. Ray’s work blends gothic atmospheres, inverted mythology, and unsettling urban spaces, distinct from but often compared to Lovecraft.

Reviews praise Jean Ray as a major figure of European weird and gothic fiction. Centerpieces include Malpertuis and the collections 25 racconti neri e fantastici and I racconti del whisky. Themes span inverted mythology, eerie urban spaces, and multidimensional unease, often compared to Lovecraft yet distinctly European in tone. Recent Italian reissues by Agenzia Alcatraz and Hypnos get nods from reviewers.
