Jarvis Cocker & Chilly Gonzales

Musical Group

A collaboration between English singer Jarvis Cocker and Canadian pianist Chilly Gonzales that resulted in the 2017 concept album Room 29, released on Deutsche Grammophon and inspired by the Chateau Marmont.

Jarvis Cocker is best known as the frontman of the band Pulp. Chilly Gonzales is the stage name of Jason Charles Beck. Room 29 was released in 2017 on Deutsche Grammophon. The project was presented as an album and envisioned to be staged as a theatrical show written by Jarvis Cocker with film historian David Thomson. The review notes collaborations on the record with Nathalie Hauptman, Hasko Kroeger and Maud Techa.

The reviews focus on Room 29 (2017), a piano-led concept album about the Chateau Marmont. Jarvis Cocker provides sung and spoken-word parts while Chilly Gonzales supplies piano and arrangements. The reviewer praises the atmosphere but finds the project self-referential and ultimately unsuccessful in embodying its subjects. The album was released on Deutsche Grammophon.
