Finally, the Post-Nothing. With a title so striking, it was impossible to avoid listening to this band.
That's how I discovered that the Japandroids, despite the name evoking Japanese craziness, are Canadian, from Vancouver, with Brian on guitar and David on drums.
Now, even if it's the overused formula of just guitar and drums (but the White Stripes have nothing to do with them) and without being (yet) prodigies, these two bring out some guts when it comes to playing.
The guitar is on an overdose of adrenaline, capable of avoiding the banality of the power chord at all costs; the drums are a sort of hormonal storm, with so many rolls, cymbal crashes, and hi-hat inserts. The melody is there, but it never becomes cheesy, since it is drowned out by the volume of the guitar and the noise of the drums; and this vigor does not wear out in the canonical two-three minutes of a song, for example, the six minutes of Crazy / Forever, with the guitar tracing a groove soaked in fuzz, reaching almost stoner outcomes.
The concluding I Quit Girls has the task of letting me catch my breath, with a song that is as close to a ballad as the Japandroids can get. The fact that they cover Big Black and McLusky makes them appealing to me regardless.
Given these premises, my three balls of esteem are well deserved, and I wish them lots of luck for the future.
May they make many more albums like this.
