English novelist (1775–1817) best known for novels of manners and social satire set among the British landed gentry.

Born 16 December 1775, died 18 July 1817. Major novels include Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815). Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published posthumously in 1818.
