Jan Garbarek (born 1947) is a Norwegian saxophonist and bandleader noted for blending jazz with European folk and world influences. He has a long association with ECM Records and has collaborated with artists such as Keith Jarrett and Eberhard Weber.

Plays soprano and tenor saxophone. Longtime association with ECM Records. Collaborated with Keith Jarrett, Eberhard Weber; performed with musicians such as Trilok Gurtu (as noted in the Padova concert review).

Two DeBaser reviews give a mixed portrait: a rave review for Twelve Moons and a critical report of a 2008 Padova concert. Praise centers on Garbarek's soprano lyricism and European-folk inflections. Criticism targets polished arrangements and a perceived emotional distance.

For:Fans of European jazz, ECM listeners, saxophone enthusiasts, readers of album and concert reviews.
