LA RECENSIONE

Even the greats cry!

Mandelbaum's book is definitely an important tool for discovering the greatness of Ingmar Bergman, especially if seen from the... côté français.
Particularly in the section dedicated to the film "Monica and the Desire," one appreciates the great appreciation that the... "jeunes turcs" had for the Master's film and the immense extent to which they contributed to the spread of the greatness of who, shortly thereafter, would become "the best director ever."
However, it contains a small error: where it reads that... (verbatim): Max von Sydow... makes his debut as a gas station attendant in "Wild Strawberries" and is quickly promoted to the rank of metaphysical personality (The Seventh Seal, The Virgin Spring)....
What a pity! Because Max von Sydow debuts with Bergman in The Seventh Seal (1956), only afterward did he make a "cameo" as a gas station attendant in "Wild Strawberries" (1957). (Sic!)
If a text wants to enter history, it should avoid these... approximations.

All the more so if it is published by the Cahiers du Cinéma.

Summary by Bot

The review highlights Mandelbaum’s book as a significant resource for exploring Ingmar Bergman’s greatness, especially from a French viewpoint. It praises the book’s insights on the film 'Monica and the Desire' and the appreciation from young filmmakers. However, it points out a factual error concerning Max von Sydow’s debut, urging care in historical accuracy. Overall, the book is recommended but with caution regarding these details.
