Masterpiece, masterpiece, masterpiece. The right word for this album, really beautiful, with perfectly crafted riffs and solos studied in minute detail.
Let's go in order, the first song, "Aces High" (one of Maiden's most beautiful songs) opens this album immediately revealing its true nature, and Bruce's splendid interpretation makes it seem even more beautiful. Let's move on to the second track, "Two Minutes To Midnight" which opens in classic Iron style; this song will then become a true religion for the fans, as it will practically always be played at their concerts (even today). The third track "Losfer Words" is a strange instrumental (strange because Maiden have very little instrumental in their repertoire) but it's still pleasant to listen to. But the best part of the album arrives with the "Fantastic Four" "Powerslave"\"The Duellist"\"Back In The Village"\ and the absolute masterpiece "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner". These four songs with very beautiful riffs and solos are a concentrate of epicness, grandeur, and pure musical energy. But let's go in order; the fourth and fifth tracks talk about swords, duels, and battles, simply stunning. It moves on to "Back In The Village", a song that glides by with pleasure with Bruce's deadly high notes reaching unimaginable peaks. So we arrive at the title track "Powerslave" which begins with winds and laughter only to explode in the end, and the lyrics, about a pharaoh who does not want to accept his death, are very beautiful. We reach then the longest and most ambitious song of the entire Maiden repertoire (the duration even reaches close to 15 minutes), a song to listen to all in one breath, which never becomes boring, and instead, the more you listen to it, the more you know and appreciate it.
I conclude this review by recommending (I think like many others before me) this album to anyone who is a true fan of old school Iron Maiden, even though I own all their albums and I have to say they are all very beautiful, but this along with "The Number Of The Beast" is without a doubt the best, and a true Maiden fan must own it.
"The first track, the famous 'Aces High,' leaves you breathless with a sustained bass and soaring guitars."
"The last track 'The Rime of The Ancient Mariner' is a historic piece… still played and acclaimed by fans twenty years later."
This CD with a cover that takes us back to the times of ancient Egypt has been one of Iron Maiden’s greatest masterpieces.
‘Rime Of The Ancient Mariner,’ with its thirteen minutes of song, might seem like a tiresome song at first, but when Steve takes the helm of it all, we discover an extraordinary Maiden style that encourages us never to stop listening.
Powerslave, the perfect synthesis of the band’s furious early approach and their exploration of new sounds.
'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner' is nothing short of a not quite perfect assembly of at least three or four songs, complete with a central part recited by an off-screen voice.
The CD in question can be considered perfect in every aspect: cover, production (keep in mind that 22 years have passed) and songs.
'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner'... in just under 15 minutes is encapsulated the best Iron has recorded: A track to pass on to posterity.
Powerslave is, without a doubt, my favorite album by Iron Maiden.
Listening to tracks like this truly evokes sadness because it makes you realize that there will never be albums and bands like this again.
