On this site, there are almost 60 reviews discussing the best heavy metal band, Iron Maiden, but none about the live EP "Maiden Japan," released shortly before the classic "The Number Of The Beast." In short, it can be said that the attention on the latter somewhat overshadowed this mini-album, which was recorded with Paul Di'Anno in Japan. Although it contains only 4 tracks (5 if you consider the American edition, which includes the legendary "Wratchild," which with Di'Anno was on another level), it stands up to various double or triple live albums because the energy and power of "Maiden Japan" immediately captivates the listener and is the last testament to the first part of Maiden's career: the era of albums like "Iron Maiden" and "Killers." The songs present here are history in the NWOBHM and classics from Maiden's (old) repertoire, namely "Running Free", "Remember Tomorrow", "Killers", and "Innocent Exile".
The band was still in its early years and naturally gave its best, not to mention Di'Anno's excellent vocals. This EP is excellent (despite being very short) and is NOT just for the hardcore fans; it plays its worthy part in Iron Maiden's solid discography.
