Let's start by saying that Iron Maiden live is as grand as one can imagine. Unfortunately, they have almost always been penalized in terms of recording, with the exception of the old “Live After Death”.
This double CD “Live At Donington” is the pinnacle of the Fear Of The Dark tour of 1991/92. Everything gravitates around what I continue to consider the most beautiful Maiden song after “Hallowed Be Thy Name”, which here fortunately is one of the best-executed.
From the aforementioned album, the concert presents the same dark atmosphere, starting from the location: the Donington Castle in England. The opening song is one of the best in that role, “Be Quick Or Be Dead”. Following are “The Number Of The Beast”, “Wrathchild”, “From Here To Eternity”. The latter has a poor live performance, at least in this case: the vocals come and go, and the guitar sound borders on the ridiculous.
And then “Can I Play With Madness”, “Wasting Love”, “Tailgunner”, “The Evil That Men Do” (beautiful). After the already mentioned tour title-track, the most noteworthy is surely “Heaven Can Wait”. The chorus sung with the audience is legendary and the song is one of the best ever performed live by Maiden.
The second disc is dedicated to the classics: “2 Minutes To Midnight” and “Hallowed Be Thy Name” above all. Let's skip “Iron Maiden” (Bruce has never been great at singing it).
Forget about “A Real Live Dead One” or the latest “Death On The Road” if you are not die-hard fans, but this one, along with the historic “Live After Death” and the more recent “Rock In Rio”, is a fundamental chapter in the history of the greatest heavy metal band of all time.
The live show starts with power and speed, with a legendary trio: 'Be Quick Or Be Dead', 'The Number of the Beast' and 'Wrathchild'.
We can only regret not having attended one of the most exciting shows by the greatest metal band of all time.
