Here we are: I am well aware that I am more or less the tenth reviewer of this CD, but I have regrettably noticed that none of the proposed reviews fully reflect my state of mind towards the "legendary" Iron.
I am here to speak frankly, and frank I shall be: to begin with, it's well to preface that I have never been able to stand Iron Maiden, I have never even considered them heavy metal (an intense hard rock and nothing more), therefore I can review this CD without the beloved "respect for one of the most important bands of the scene...".
I press the play button and we're off, "A Matter Of Life And Death" begins: if at first I hoped deeply to be faced with a revolutionary CD, musically speaking, I am disappointed from the very first notes of the CD: the first "Different World", in fact, immediately presents the classic "galloping" riff of the English sextet, with a Dickinson increasingly annoying in his unnecessary strained high notes. The song flows without any emotional peak, and after a few seconds begins, in my opinion, with the second song a single block almost identical of notes, arpeggios, solos, and the like that will only conclude with the last song "The Legacy".
I find indeed that the CD is nothing but a failed experiment of heavy "melodic" metal crossed with B-list prog. I know that die-hard fans of the virgin will never even consider my words, but I firmly believe that Iron Maiden are one of the most overrated bands that the entire "metal" scene has ever had... and forgive me if that sounds harsh...
P.S. This is my first review so forgive any spelling horrors, mostly due to my inexperience.
It’s a flawless album in terms of production, technique, and Bruce’s vocal performance.
The tracks are very long and not very immediate, but it’s certainly not a hard metal album, which suits the band’s age.
‘A Matter of Life and Death’ is an album that has many things to say and requires an audience willing to sit down and listen to it calmly and coherently.
The album itself is excellent, full of well-conceived and executed ideas, a masterpiece? I certainly won’t be the one to decide it; the arduous sentence is left to posterity.
Each song has its own particular light, and there isn’t a single track placed just to extend the album’s duration.
Ladies and gentlemen, the beast is back, and despite the age, it is also quite angry and in shape!!
"The choruses in 'These Colours Don't Run' are embarrassing, the song rhythms are incredibly predictable."
"If you can't produce an average-level album, why do you struggle to carry on?"
"An album to buy and listen to calmly to appreciate it... it sounds terribly good."
"Listen, listen, listen and open your mind. Up the irons."
