A Matter Of Life And Death is yet another album by Iron and it promises to be a rather dark work right from the cover. The Liverpool faces open the new album in great style with Different World, a track used as the second single: the riffs are quite heavy, but overall it is perhaps the most interesting piece of the album as it significantly deviates from the classic Maiden style; the verse is a classic of 3 chords in the Iron style, but the chorus and the C part are in the T-Rex style... note Adrian Smith's solo. Rating: 9
The Pilgrim resumes the oriental riffs of Powerslave and is overall a good piece (also noteworthy here is Gers' "Egyptian" solo). Rating: 7+.
The Longest Day is a great piece in classic Iron Maiden style. Rating: 8-
More epic in tone is The Legacy, a track in which Dickinson exploits his full vocal potential, creating stunning choral effects. Rating: 8
The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg is rather cumbersome as a song, as the same verse and chorus are presented too much for 5 minutes. Rating: 6+
Out Of The Shadows is a ballad that breaks the heavy metal atmosphere of the album a bit, perhaps the chord part is a little misplaced. Rating: 6.5
And now onto the negative notes:
These Colours Don't Run, Lord Of The Light, and Brighter Than A Thousand Suns are not exactly the worst that could exist but they certainly don't deserve a passing grade. Rating: 4.5
But the worst is that song by many touted as the best of the album: For The Greater Good Of God, of an obscene boredom... the vocal part is so uniform that you can hardly distinguish the verse from the chorus. Rating: 3
Overall though, a good album (worth buying just for Different World). Rating: 7
It’s a flawless album in terms of production, technique, and Bruce’s vocal performance.
The tracks are very long and not very immediate, but it’s certainly not a hard metal album, which suits the band’s age.
‘A Matter of Life and Death’ is an album that has many things to say and requires an audience willing to sit down and listen to it calmly and coherently.
The album itself is excellent, full of well-conceived and executed ideas, a masterpiece? I certainly won’t be the one to decide it; the arduous sentence is left to posterity.
Each song has its own particular light, and there isn’t a single track placed just to extend the album’s duration.
Ladies and gentlemen, the beast is back, and despite the age, it is also quite angry and in shape!!
"The choruses in 'These Colours Don't Run' are embarrassing, the song rhythms are incredibly predictable."
"If you can't produce an average-level album, why do you struggle to carry on?"
"An album to buy and listen to calmly to appreciate it... it sounds terribly good."
"Listen, listen, listen and open your mind. Up the irons."
