Let's say that this is not exactly the easiest of reviews to start my journey into the depths of little-read reviews (since it is not a very famous album) on DeBaser. But since we don't like easy things, we make them difficult!
Let's leave aside for a moment all the crap swirling around in my head and talk about the album: these 5 Americans with a passion for heavy and technical stuff came together thanks to the technically impeccable drummer who goes by the name of Matthew Gossman. On the group's first demo "Means Which By The End Is Justified," he played everything himself. Then he decided to bring in other folks to play with him and found four young lads quite capable in the skills required by the genre. But now let's seriously get to the album.
It begins with the end of the demo, namely "Century II" (on the demo guess what it was called? Century I) and one can already sense what the album might develop into. If you don't like technique for technique's sake, I definitely do not recommend the album, as your opinion on the music will never change. Continuing to talk about music, I can only tell you that you will have to keep your eye fixed on the display of the device with which you are playing these "sweet" notes in question to realize when one song ends and another begins, since it's more of a musical flow than individual songs.
All the tracks, on a superficial and inattentive listen, will sound identical, but with several spins in your stereo, you'll hear that it's not so. Personally, I was particularly struck by "Dead Before I Stray" and all tracks from number 6 to 9 (in order: "Fortitudine", "Beyond Treachery", "None Shall Pass", "Prologue To The Campaign") for their dynamism (and it would be surprising if there wasn't dynamism in this stuff) and their performance power (I hope Mr. Gossman doesn't use triggers).
The concluding "Prologue To The Campaign" (which on the back cover simply appears as "Prologue..."), whose theme should probably be revisited during composition to open the next album.
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
05 The Inexorable (03:12)
Awaken into sin
The gods of old would consume
With the fires of the south
And the winds of the north
Shake your first and stare onward
None will cultivate that which is
Show me doom and greet death with malice
End has no meaning, deathless is my way
Frow immune to weakness
That, to give is no longer my place
That, to take, have it all
Don't decline my deeds
I lose only at my own hand
Attempts of aptness fall from their place
For virtue and ambition are one but not the same
