Intro: if only you knew how much I love Interpol, how much they are part of me; how many stories full of joys and sorrows behind "Turn On The Bright Lights"... Once again the cover is sensational; once again it's red-black and once again it hosts sublime music.
The first song is Say Hello To The Angels, the version is the same as the album... I listen to it again, mesmerized by its beauty. Before I can recover, those wonderful guitar chords that mark the beginning of NYC immediately start... but something sounds different; indeed!!
It's the demo version, at times almost better than the original: more melancholic, tired, distant. Then come the "Black Session" recordings, live versions recorded in France...
The notes of Obstacle 1 burst from the speakers, I listen carefully and... I don't dislike it, but I prefer the album version, or maybe the live one from Florence.
So here we are at the hidden gem of the Black EP, Specialist. How does it sound? The answer, besides "Interpol-like," is: divinely! It could have been the 12th song on the album and it's worth spending 10 euros just to have it.
I'm ecstatic, I'm almost about to faint after the "one-two" punch to the heart of Specialist / Leif Erikson... Luckily there's PDA that makes me clap my hands and sing at the top of my lungs: “Sleep tight, grim rite, we have two hundred couches where you can sleep tonight...”
