I was a bit disappointed when I saw that this album hadn't been reviewed by anyone: this is certainly, along with "Science," the most interesting thing Incubus has ever done.
I don't want to start talking about how they've now sold out and become commercial, I just want to remember them when they were that legendary group of good-natured funksters and funk-fanatics, with incredible technical skills. I'm sorry for how things have ended up in their career, but it must also be said that Incubus started to have real success more because of Brandon's good looks than anything else.
This album revisits some tracks already present on the previous "Fungus Amongus" with the addition of the DJ parts which can really be heard and make everything even more interesting; I can't consider "Enjoy" a real album because it contains only six tracks and lasts just over half an hour, but it's a half-hour of pure pleasure.
The album starts with "You will be a hot dancer", the sound of the needle on the vinyl in the background and a guitar intro that couldn't be funkier, just the first twenty seconds of this record put you in a good mood, the track has a pleasant catchy chorus and is quite fun but the best is yet to come. In fact, "Shaft", the following track, is one of the most interesting songs on the album because all the members demonstrate how skilled they are: the group's technique is enormous, from the slapped bass to the vocal overdubs, to the drums, to the incredible guitar sound, everything flows perfectly and everyone does their part perfectly.
Perhaps this is almost a flaw for the band, they know they are technically fantastic and have a bit of a tendency to overdo it to show it off to everyone, but they can afford it and they entertain so much that you gladly forgive them. The album continues with "Take me to your leader", an interesting track in which the DJ once again makes the difference (it's a shame they changed him after "Science"! The current one sounds decidedly more pop). Track number four is "Version", a truly crossover song: funky start, more energetic bridge, and almost reggae chorus, here Incubus shows that they are really indebted to bands like Faith No More (Brandon, the vocalist, practically sings exactly like Mike Patton, say no more!!). The next track is, in my opinion, the best on the album, with the unpronounceable title "Azwethinkweiz" it's a true pleasure for the ears, with a whistled chorus, a practically perfect rhythmic section and even trumpets at the end, if you love funky this track will drive you crazy. After another brief spoken interlude (between all the tracks there are always small skits or dialogues) the album closes with "Hilikus", where once again, they show how talented they are, with an instrumental part where they demonstrate they are having as much fun playing as we are listening to them.
In short, this album is truly enjoyable, endowed with boundless creativity; it's great because you can tell it was recorded by a group of fun-loving jokers who really love playing and experimenting with new solutions and have a blast doing it. A collection of tracks that really makes one miss this band because their recent history has shown how much a band's music can change when it's no longer played for pleasure but more for interest and without the straightforwardness and spontaneity of the past.
