THE REVIEW

The Incubus... without a doubt, alongside Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, the most loved and most hated band in the rock/metal scene. In 2004, “A Crow Left Of The Murder” was released, three years after the awful “Morning View.”
True fans of the band undoubtedly wished for a new “S.C.I.E.N.C.E.”, while the teenage girls aged 14 to 17 wished for a new “Morning View.” Who did Brandon Boyd and company want to please? Thankfully everyone, new and old fans alike.

But let's go in order: the first two songs, MEGALOMANIAC and A CROW LEFT IN THE MURDER, are very interesting and both have a catchy and fast-paced chorus (especially the title track). Less punchy is AGORAPHOBIA, but still enjoyable. TALK SHOWS ON MUTE is similar to the previous one, but here there are sound effects created by DJ Kilmore. The following BEWARE? CRIMINAL and SICK, SAD LITTLE WORLD have great solos, all performed by guitarist Mike Einziger. Then comes my favorite track, PISTOLA, which would not have been out of place in “S.C.I.E.N.C.E.”.
In short, so far the album is going well: pity that now comes the worst part of the CD...
SOUTHERN GIRL is slow to the point of death, although it makes a good impression. The others do not... PRICELESS, ZEE DEEVEL, MADE FOR TV MOVIE, SMILE LINES and LEECH seem like one single miserable song, and the only track that redeems the miserable final part is the touching HERE IN MY ROOM.

So: those who hoped to find in “A crow left in the murder” a new “S.C.I.E.N.C.E.” will be disappointed (also because reproducing a masterpiece like that would be quite challenging), but this doesn't mean the album should be discarded. On the contrary, I consider it the second best album of Brandon Boyd's band. Continuing to experiment with new sounds and evolve musically is a characteristic that every rock or metal band must have, and the Incubus, this time, did not fail (let's pretend “Morning View” never came out...). Certainly, though, one should not forget how they were in the past. It would be unfair for those, like me, who followed this band thanks to “S.C.I.E.N.C.E.”

Summary by Bot

This review of Incubus' 'A Crow Left Of The Murder' discusses the band's effort to please both old and new fans. While some tracks like 'Megalomaniac' and 'Pistola' stand out, the album's latter half disappoints. It's not a 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E.' remake but showcases musical growth, earning a solid middle-ground rating.

Incubus

Incubus are an American rock band formed in 1991 in Calabasas, California, widely associated with alternative rock and (early on) funk- and metal-leaning crossover. Reviews emphasize their early experimental blend of funk/metal/hip-hop/jazz textures and later shifts toward more melodic, mainstream-friendly alt-rock.

The album opens with the 'launch' single, a violent j'accuse against the Bush administration... but the track seems a bit 'fragile.'

If their aim was to surprise the listener... well... they missed the mark!

"Together with 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E.,' we might be facing the best work of the American band in terms of intensity, compactness, and writing quality."

"The pyrotechnic first single 'Megalomaniac' is a violent attack on the then Bush administration with hard rock guitars, perfect for shouting to the sky during live performances."
