Rating: Yet another chapter for the band led by the inexhaustible and hilarious Mika Luttinen, perhaps one of the most charismatic figures in the entire black metal scene, which in recent years tends to take itself veeeeery seriously.
No panda-face painting or blood of dubious origin accompanies the music of these five Finns. For this CD, Impaled also make use of the collaboration of the guitarist of the entire extreme metal scene: Alexi Lahio, who with his solos of undeniable neoclassical taste delights himself/us throughout this Nihil.
The genre remains on black metal coordinates as always proposed, although melodic experiments can be sensed, which will further evolve in the subsequent "Absence Of War Does Not Mean Peace". Amidst so much ferocity, punk veins (and if only punk were always like this) are hinted at, as in Zero Tolerance or in Cogito Ergo Sum, perhaps the best, or melodic death in How The Laughter Dies or in the title track.
Unfortunately, this work does not always maintain the same quality level as these four songs but has enormous chasms like Human Proof and Wrath Of The Good, which for me are unlistenable.
Very good instead are the previously mentioned Cogito Ergo Sum, truly devastating in the central riff, and Zero Tolerance (with decidedly intolerant lyrics) to which How The Laughter Ends is added, with a truly sad riff that recalls ThereIn by Dark Tranquillity.
In my opinion, just Mr. Lahio's solos are worth the price of the CD, and it's a real pity that the overall quality is lowered by some not-so-happy episodes. If you're tired of listening repeatedly to Blashyrkh or Mourning Palace, this CD might provide a valid alternative to the classic Norwegian black metal.
