The Il Vile project was born in 2006 in Verbania, from the union of longtime friends who were part of other local bands, driven by a common passion for what we could commonly define as stoner-rock. A journey that led them first to the release of their debut album “Insonne” (2010) and subsequently to perform in Italy and abroad, garnering acclaim from both the public and critics. Today we find them with “La tragedia del mediocre,” an EP of six tracks in their native language, independently released. Considering they are musicians with years of experience under their belt, we can say that we are faced with a well-packaged product that is anything but trivial. The term maturity is perhaps the most fitting to describe what passes through the universe of Il Vile; their stoner-rock has strong 90s echoes in its structure, but at the same time, it has no fear of invoking that way of interpreting everything in a nearly “commercial” style à la Queens Of The Stone Age. In short, it's a decidedly cheeky mini album, but played with the right amount of grit and a handful of quite good tracks overall – “Cibo per i vermi” and “Resa cinerea” –, perhaps a little homemade in its lyrics, but maybe that's precisely where the virtue of this band lies, in their ability to be spontaneous. The sound production is stripped to the bone, and a few but interesting forays into desert rock give “La tragedia del mediocre” that extra touch, making it even more interesting in its old-school garb. Given the years between the debut and its successor, we can say that Il Vile remains more of a personal pleasure for the individual musicians rather than something super demanding, and perhaps it is better this way; by working at their own pace and driven only by their ideas and tastes, they almost always manage to create something to be proud of. As is the case here.
