The Profile

Ignazio Silone (1900–1978) was an Italian novelist, essayist, and political activist from Abruzzo. Known for Fontamara and Bread and Wine, he explored rural life, conscience, and resistance to dictatorship.

Born Secondino Tranquilli (1900–1978) in Pescina, Abruzzo; Italian novelist and political activist. A founding member of the Italian Communist Party, later a democratic socialist; lived in exile in Switzerland. Best known for Fontamara, Vino e pane (Bread and Wine), and Il segreto di Luca.

Reviews highlight Silone’s portraits of rural Abruzzo, the clash with fascism and totalitarianism, and the moral tensions between faith and politics. Fontamara emerges as a choral symbol of exploited peasants; Bread and Wine and The Seed Beneath the Snow follow Pietro Spina’s human and spiritual struggle. The Secret of Luca probes justice and love, while The School for Dictators offers a lucid anti‑dictatorship dialogue. A humane, sober style ties it all together.
