For some years now, we've been witnessing a revival of the '80s, considered the last happy decade for those who lived it and fascinating for those who didn't experience it. The most captivating aspects are the customs and traditions of the era, but it's mainly the music that particularly influences today's youth: a return to the sounds of the past transported into a modern, more technological, and advanced dimension, creating a close comparison.

Idden, an indie artist from Sardinia, released his first single “Mai” in collaboration with another local artist, Alessio Gaviano. Together they attempt to build an interesting itinerary that brings back the legendary '80s through the fresh sound of modern Itpop.

The track, upon listening, has a simple structure: the introductory piano riff becomes the main theme of the song and is subsequently repeated in the verse by the synths; a linear rhythm programmed intelligently and tastefully; finally, a leading guitar with a beautiful, precise, and clean solo.

The musical base, although simple, plays a fundamental role within the song as it explicitly revives the so-called “mood” of the distant '80s like the carefree spirit and excessiveness. It's the point on which all the reflections described in the lyrics sung by Alessio Gaviano are developed: words alluding to difficult episodes left behind and the desire to have someone by your side with whom to move forward, pursue your dreams and expectations, putting the past aside in a wild, energetic dance that never stops “Mai.”

This is not the typical Italian indie track with nonsensical lyrics and a bland musical base, but it is a track smartly constructed and architected where everything is well connected: music and lyrics.

A good debut for an emerging indie artist, latent and mysterious, who honored a nostalgic and ephemeral decade in a modern key.
