Cobble together? Not at all: this is their most perfect album from a songwriting perspective, overflowing with wonderful songs, catchy choruses, and energetic riffs. The sound is certainly more pop and "commercial" than in their previous works; is that a bad thing? No, if the music maintains the same sincerity and immediacy as before; sincerity and immediacy not sacrificed by a more refined and complete form.
Do you know Hüsker Dü for their records with WarnerBros (Candy Apple Grey and Warehouse)? Flip Your Wig has a similar sound but is ten times more immediate and captivating, listened to with more pleasure. To be clear, I love those two albums, but each time FYW leaves me amazed: how did those three manage to compose so many gems of catchiness and perfection in just a few months?
The moving "Green Eyes", the imposing and hypnotic "Find Me", "Divide & Conquer" which renders the entire career of Bad Religion superfluous, the stunning melodies of "Makes No Sense At All", "Flip Your Wig" and "Flexible Flyer" all leave you speechless; the rest is equally astonishing apart from, perhaps, a couple of tracks.
In conclusion: a highly recommended album, the easiest way to get closer to the music of Hüsker Dü and then enjoy their other masterpieces.
