Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American writer of weird fiction and horror, best known for founding elements of the Cthulhu Mythos and for influential essays on supernatural literature. He lived in Providence, Rhode Island.

Lovecraft published many stories in Weird Tales; his work was later collected and promoted by August Derleth and Arkham House. He left an extensive correspondence (often cited as numbering around 100,000 letters). His essays on supernatural fiction and criticism (e.g., Supernatural Horror in Literature) are frequently reprinted and studied.
