Another rock band from North America, this time from Canada.
An interesting quartet debuts with this album, certainly not on par with other very recent debuts (see Strokes, BRMC, Interpol, Kings Of Leon, etc...), but equally valid. It is released under the SubPop label (the label that "launched" grunge...) and produced by the band itself with the help of J. Endino (yes, yes, the same Endino who produced "Bleach" by Nirvana, another debut that has nothing to do with this one...).
That said, there seem to be all the premises for it to be a decent CD... These premises are confirmed as soon as you press the play button on the player.
It starts with "Naked In The City Again", a fairly original pop track that finds a rightful follow-up in the second track "No, Not Now", a mix of rock and electronics that takes us back to the days of Blur's "Girls & Boys", both in vocals and instrumentals...
The very cheerful atmospheres in "Get In Or Get Out" (with an interesting keyboard solo) and in "Oh, Goddamnit", classic summer tracks to listen to on the beach between a swim and a beach volleyball game...
The most radio-friendly track is definitely "Bandages", with the initial keyboards slightly reminding us of something from the '60s and a very catchy chorus, almost too much... The very energetic "Save Us S.O.S" is also nice, the penultimate track preceding the melancholic and sad "In Cairo", the closing track.
The duration is quite short (32'01")... but by now making an album that exceeds 35-40 minutes seems almost a thing of the past...
10 tracks of simple and sometimes banal pop-rock (see "Aveda"), but overall, engaging atmospheres to the right extent that strike at first listen, make this a great debut... surely more will be expected from the follow-up that the Canadian band will give to this "Make Up The Breakdown"...
