Herman Brood & His Wild Romance

Musical Group

Herman Brood & His Wild Romance was the band led by Dutch musician Herman Brood (born 1946 in Zwolle). Brood rose from playing piano in blues groups (notably Cuby + Blizzards) to fronting his own rock band in the late 1970s; Shpritsz (featuring the hit "Saturday Night") is widely regarded as a high point. Brood died by suicide in 2001.

Herman Brood was noted as a piano virtuoso who worked with Cuby + Blizzards before founding Herman Brood & His Wild Romance. The review describes Shpritsz as an anti-drug record released at a moment of apparent detoxification and highlights Brood's public struggles with drug addiction, a relationship with Nina Hagen, later work as a painter, posthumous exhibitions and a statue in his hometown of Zwolle.

The review presents Shpritsz as Herman Brood's masterpiece and highlights the hit "Saturday Night". It traces Brood's early work with Cuby + Blizzards, his piano virtuosity, the rise of Herman Brood & His Wild Romance (Street, Shpritsz), and the increasing grip of drugs on his life. The piece ends by noting Brood's 2001 suicide and his posthumous recognition in art and tributes.
