Henry Miller (1891–1980) was an American writer known for candid, autobiographical novels such as Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn; his frank treatment of sex led to censorship battles in the United States.

Miller's most famous works are highly autobiographical and often explicit; Tropic of Capricorn was published in 1939 during his Paris period. His books were subject to censorship in the United States and publication restrictions were lifted after court decisions in the early 1960s. He was also active as a painter.

Reviews praise Henry Miller's frank, autobiographical prose and linguistic experimentation. Critics highlight Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, and Opus Pistorum. Miller's candid treatment of sex and everyday life is seen as liberating and universal. Several reviews note the censorship his work encountered in the United States.

I will sing for you, perhaps a bit off-key, but I will sing. I will sing while you die, I will dance on your dirty carcass..."
