Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French artist, a leading figure of Fauvism, known for painting, printmaking, sculpture and for his late paper cut-outs (gouaches découpés).

Born 1869, died 1954. Leader of the Fauves in the first decade of the 20th century. In later life developed paper cut-outs (gouaches découpés); the limited-edition book Jazz (1947) reproduces many of these compositions.

The available review examines Matisse's role in Fauvism, his lifelong focus on color and balance, and his late-life paper cut-outs compiled in the book Jazz (1947). It contextualizes Fauvism's short lifespan and long influence and describes the production and themes of Jazz. Practical notes on editions and reproductions are provided.

There have been very few movements in human history, across all fields, artistic, social, cultural, etc., whose duration was inversely proportional to their influence and importance as the "Fauves": in just under 3 years (1905-1907) of existence, ending with the collapse of the "project" due to the lack of an organic artistic program, Matisse, Vlaminck, and Derain, to name the most important, had many proponents.
