I write to you while listening to a Deutsche Grammophon record "Chopin and Rachmaninov - piano sonatas"… The pianist, though it's limiting to define her simply this way... and I'll explain why later… is French and goes by the name of Helene Grimaud...
That romantic Fryderyk has been interpreted by everyone - think of our Pollini who has a record in the charts, at this moment, worldwide... with his Nocturnes -just like that edgy Sergej- some may remember the movie "SHINE"... true story of musician David Helfgott who went mad with his Rachmaninov 3- but here we are facing a different musical language...
Helene touches the black and white keys with icy grace and with a strong and meditated passion... an expressive immediacy that takes me far away… almost feeling like a 19th-century listener… It might be the candle that mystically and esoterically shines before me… it might be that I feel inadequate in this sterile post-modern... but Grimaud instills drops of well-being and a desire to be proactive... A sense of pure and late-romantic naivety vaguely Schillerian?? Here she is tackling the allegro molto, sonata number 2… lightly crossing and cresting sharp peaks... She colors my habitat crimson only to quickly switch to a yellow flat... She shakes me, entangles me and leaves me thoughtful in pauses with bischromatic musical values… She fills me with intoxicating embellishments and vigorous trills and convoluted elaborations... sweet cantabilities that turn lyrical and dreamy... Suddenly concise and swift... tints the air with aromatic chromatisms... The tension suddenly eases... moving towards the most extreme virtuosity... What a delight, guys!!! What heavenly music!!!
Why is Grimaud not just a talented and skillful pianist? First of all, she is of stunning beauty... Her light eyes have a magnetism that disturbs... Look at the photo on the CD cover and you’ll understand... She is fascinating... but that’s not all!... she also writes... and brilliantly! Recently published by Bollati-Boringhieri "VARIAZIONI SELVAGGE"... a sort of novel-biography that reveals "ad abundantiam" her literary talent... You must read it: it is enjoyable and intriguing!!! But listen, listen!!! Our transalpine raises wolves who adore her and with whom she speaks… She has created in the USA the "WOLF CONSERVATION CENTER" to protect and raise this animal, which is among the noblest of all... What an eclectic woman I have introduced to you, friends!! I, perhaps, I confess... have fallen in love!!! Talent and beauty, in every sense, enclosed in a single person...
Incredible and almost unbelievable! I would like to spend a week with her just to verify if this woman is human... Good God! But she must have a flaw?? It’s not even possible? But she doesn't want to know about it... and here she slowly... calms me with the notes of "Marche Funèbre" op 35 in B flat minor... while the weary and truly incredible day dies... BUY RECORD AND BOOK.. SMILES OF UNKNOWN DISTANCES... I recommend!!! yours poetarainer
