The Profile

Heaven & Hell were an English-American heavy metal band formed in 2006 by Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Ronnie James Dio, and Vinny Appice to focus on the Dio-era Black Sabbath material. They released one studio album, The Devil You Know (2009), and ceased activity following Dio’s death in 2010.

Formed to support The Dio Years compilation and ensuing tour; name taken from Black Sabbath’s 1980 album Heaven and Hell to distinguish the Dio era; core lineup: Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass), Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Vinny Appice (drums).

The reviews focus on Heaven & Hell’s 2009 album The Devil You Know, mixing praise for its doom-laden riffs and standout cuts (“Bible Black,” “Follow the Tears,” “Eating the Cannibals”) with one dissent criticizing tired vocals and repetitiveness. A live bootleg write-up relives the 2007 Gods of Metal set in Milan, spotlighting the Dio-era Black Sabbath catalog and lineup chemistry. Overall tone: respectful, detailed, and largely enthusiastic about the band’s return to a darker, weightier sound.
