Chapter #(insert number) - the mission continues...
Today it's Head Wound City's turn, already mentioned in the previous review: a supergroup formed by members of the Blood Brothers (Jordan Blilie, Cody Votolato), The Locust (Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian), and Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Nick Zinner), in 2004.
In short, an incredible combo of crazy madmen. And thank goodness... because to play certain genres, which I will describe shortly, you need to be.
For this project, they claimed to be inspired by the following artists: Antioch Arrow, GG Allin, Man Is The Bastard, Gang Of Four, Queen, Slayer, The Stooges, and Give Up The Ghost.
This self-titled EP from 2005 is their first recording opportunity to showcase themselves; furthermore, I will immediately hint that it will remain the only release until May 2016 with the release of their first full-length album “A New Wave Of Violence,” because the group was put on standby until 2014.
As is common recently: 7 tracks for even less than 10 minutes.
It's never easy to categorize these musical offerings, a single term wouldn't suffice. An exclusive cocktail of Mathcore, Thrashcore, classic Hardcore Punk, Noise Rock accompanied by excellent doses of feedback and various noises making everything more excruciating, non-psychedelic, and epileptic.
Besides the evergreen screams & vocal rages, the musical structures demonstrate a truly impressive sense of rhythm, an obligatory characteristic in Mathcore. The dirtiest and most extraordinary work is done by Gabe Serbian behind the skins, showcasing robotic fills accompanied by blast beats that sound like gunfire from a motor that operates in bursts.
The sensations you feel when a fork accidentally scrapes on a plate, but this time they are more than enjoyable.
Even more in summary: The Blood Brothers meets The Locust. A well-deserved 4 and a half rounded up.
