Haruki Murakami (born 12 January 1949) is a Japanese novelist and writer. He debuted in 1979 and is known for blending surreal elements, pop culture and music references across novels and essays.

Debuted with Hear the Wind Sing (1979). Norwegian Wood (1987) increased his international popularity. Recurring motifs include music, parallel/oneiric realities and coming-of-age themes; he has also written memoiristic work about running.

Reviews praise Murakami's music-infused, melancholic coming-of-age writing (Norwegian Wood) while noting his more surreal, divisive turns (Kafka on the Shore). His essay/memoir on running elicits thoughtful, bittersweet reactions. Overall the reception in these reviews is admiring but ambivalent.

For:Readers of literary and surreal fiction, fans of music-infused narratives, and readers interested in running memoirs.

Noruwei No Mori is indeed a book filled with realism and sentimentality until then untouched by him, becoming his most intimate, existential, and painful work... and leading to his definitive consecration in terms of international popularity.

The art of running from my point of view is the ability to move your butt from point A to point B for the mere pleasure of feeling a layer of salt forming on your face.
