The Hangover had promised to make themselves heard again, especially after the Rock Targato Italia 2003 finale, and they did so with this mini CD of five tracks that musically doesn't bring any substantial news for this combo from Edolo (BS) composed of Paolo Topa, a singer with a penchant for writing visionary and night-thought stories (such is the case with the lyrics of these five songs), guitarists Andrea Mazzoleni and Fabio Pedrotti, bassist Fiorenzo Basioli, and drummer Aldo Fogazzi.
The novelty lies in the remarkable skills the five have achieved both in playing their instruments and interpreting the pieces.
I won’t go into the details of these songs, but I want to highlight the extreme care and professionalism with which the album was recorded (at 468 Recordings in Costa Volpino by Ronnie Amighetti).
The cover is in a cardboard digipak (and this is another proof of their attention to detail, following the enormous packaging for “Le uova della mia amnesia” three years ago, but how much do they spend on these operations?) and, surprisingly given whom we're talking about, there are no “ghost-tracks.”
The five tracks unfold all on a garage-noise rock slightly more listenable than previous pieces; however, they are significantly better in terms of instrumentation, perhaps the excellent recording quality played in their favor, who knows.
All these tracks originate directly in the rehearsal room, it can almost be said that the only premeditated part is the lyrics, visionary, like a mystery book with a tendency towards horror.
For the rest, everything derives from ideas that the musicians develop directly in practice, pieces marked by dark and anxiety-inducing rhythms, almost a sense of tragedy, suddenly interrupted by explosions of sounds and noises, especially from heavy guitar riffs.
The tracks are titled “In frantumi” (the single), “Cinque odori,” my personal favorite, “Acquaragia,” “Nera,” and the concluding “Il cambio della guardia,” which talks about a party in the garden of a couple's house, a party during which a furious fight breaks out between the two, culminating in a murder with the rest of the guests observing the woman's corpse while eating and drinking, believing it all to be a fiction.
Previously, they released some cassettes recorded directly in the rehearsal room, and with the CD "Le uova della mia amnesia" in 2002.
An album that could signify maturation for these guys who do not give up in the face of almost total lack of response from the local audience.
