American musical duo of Daryl Hall and John Oates, formed in Philadelphia in the early 1970s, known for blue-eyed soul and pop/rock hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Formed in the early 1970s in Philadelphia. Best known for a string of hits in the 1970s and 1980s (examples in the reviews: "Maneater", "Sara Smile"). Daryl Hall typically recognized as the lead vocalist; John Oates noted for arrangements and harmony.

Three DeBaser reviews praise Daryl Hall's vocal prowess and the duo's 1970s–80s blue-eyed soul/pop work. H2O and Big Bam Boom are highlighted for their strong pop and danceable R&B production; War Babies is noted for its adventurous Todd Rundgren collaboration. John Oates is described as an effective arranging/production partner.

The best things are right at the two extremes of the album: the opening “Out of Touch,” preceded by a brief and percussive instrumental prelude dominated by the Synclavier, and the concluding “Possession Obsession,” sung by Oates; the former is more intense, the latter more soothing with its delightful doo-woop style response choruses.

To give birth in no time (without the dramatic psychological outcomes our hero would face in crafting the XTC masterpiece "Skylarking," 1986) to what some consider the only question mark in the duo's discography, which many count (not without substantial reasons) as the missing link in Todd's work with his Utopia, and which many others – though, in my opinion, never quite enough – hail as a hidden masterpiece of absolute innovative value and compositional uniqueness, born of the successful union of creative instances "so far, yet so close": "War Babies" (1974).
