For fans of Slam, here's a band, one of the thousands dedicated to this genre, an Ultra Guttural Brutal Death Metal with gore lyrics, one of the many charming groups destined to remain somewhat in the shadows primarily due to the lack of innovation. Indeed, inevitably these bands end up resembling each other.
Let me state that I am a big fan of this scene. Any group with a name like Guttural Engorgement, with splatter covers and that plays Ultra Guttural Brutal is my daily bread. However, as a reviewer, I must be selective and detailed, even with bands like these. The album in question features short songs, with a maximum of 2 minutes, plus an intro and an interlude. It must be said that given the total of 13 tracks, the band didn't exert themselves too much, but this is understandable, especially at the financial resource level of the band itself. These tracks, despite being about a minute and a half long, focus more on the slow, rotten pace rather than hyper-fast breaks. The band bases almost everything on the extremely guttural voice of the growler, sacrifices technique, and relies on highly compressed riffs. The guitar is tuned to very low tones, and the distortion is quite high. Instruments like the bass don't find much space in this album, while the drums are more focused on slow rhythms than on very fast blast beats. Overall, the album is listenable, remains a classic brutal album. There are fast breaks present, even though, as I already explained, the band prefers the slow and rotten parts.
The only thing that lacks is the total lack of innovation, the desire to elevate, to say: this is something we do alone. It's obvious that a band can't suddenly rise and invent a new genre. I'm talking about small details that an attentive brutal fan would notice, like the tone of the growl, the choice of riffs, etc... The band doesn't try to express something of their own, produces a decent album but one that reeks (besides corpselike) of already heard. As I repeat, this is a common thing for many bands in this genre, and I, in fact, as a fan encourage Guttural Engorgement to continue to delight us, but the objective reality does not change, a merely sufficient album but nothing more.
