The Profile

Guru Guru is a German Krautrock band formed in 1968 by drummer Mani Neumeier, with early lineups featuring bassist Uli Trepte and guitarist Ax Genrich. Their landmark albums Ufo (1970), Hinten (1971) and Känguru (1972) fused psychedelic excess, free-rock improvisation and kosmische textures.

German Krautrock pioneers led by Mani Neumeier; classic early trio with Uli Trepte (bass) and Ax Genrich (guitar). Seminal albums include Ufo (1970), Hinten (1971) and Känguru (1972).

DeBaser’s reviews paint Guru Guru as a cornerstone of German Krautrock: cosmic noise, free-rock sprawl and heavy, bluesy riffs. Mani Neumeier’s drumming leads feral, suite-like excursions. Ufo (1970) is singled out as brain-detuning and pioneering; Hinten (1971) extends the kosmische assault; Känguru (1972) leans into hard-psych and blues with long forms. Ax Genrich’s guitar and Uli Trepte’s bass are repeatedly praised.
