Rating: Active since the '90s, the Russian band Grenouer has, in its own way, written some chapters in the history of modern/alternative rock. With seven albums to their name, that's no small feat, even more so when you consider them still alive and kicking today; these musicians are tough characters. Their discography is decidedly erratic, featuring excellent albums and confused passages, where fleeting trends seemed to outweigh the stylistic essence of the St. Petersburg combo. Albums with shades of metalcore, nu-metal, and industrial have led Grenouer to grow, choosing paths recently less traveled but always intriguing if you're accustomed to listening to today's rock.
“Blood On The Face” is the result of this journey, an album with a bit of Italy in its DNA (Dualized and Eddy Cavazza handled the mixing and production) and that heavy and powerful sound that especially characterizes overseas bands. A satisfying result, in short, arrived after several legal disputes with the previous record label and the desire of these musicians to present themselves without mincing words. A flaw often found in their previous albums was confusing the listener by combining the general offering – rock – with external elements that had little to do with it. Today – fortunately – all this is a distant memory, Grenouer has decisively moved towards rock, showcasing a tracklist boasting both melodic and more electrifying episodes, all with taste and the right dose of edge.
The best chapter of such an extensive discography? Probably yes, and I believe the interested parties know it well, skillfully giving each track its own identity through meticulous attention to detail in songwriting. The version released by Mausoleum Records features a reinterpretation of “All in the Suit That You Wear” by Stone Temple Pilots, a band that is undoubtedly among the primary sources of inspiration for the group. An album that is modern yet has a 90s aftertaste, if you are an enthusiast of this type of music, the recommendation is to give these Grenouer a chance.
