"D.A.M.N." isn't exactly up-to-date anymore (1996), but it's such a monstrous and bizarre album that I already see it being reassessed, at least when associated with the recent theatrical "horror-glam" appearances of Marilyn Manson and Co.
These guys are truly scary.
Let's start with the identity of the band: "Sensationell" as S. Raab would say: Datsu on drums, Daisaku on bass, and Monzawa on guitar and vocals, in other words, the legendary Greenmachine, are Japanese.
The cover is horrible, violent, and disgusting—exactly what you expect from an album to be placed in the darkest and heaviest metal. And their eccentric sound is brutal, at times very doom, then exploding into desperate, scream-your-lungs-out cries and terrifying grindcore riffs. They are very reminiscent of early Cathedral and Entombed with their typical distortions.
I still like the album today because the role of the "voice" is, fortunately, quite secondary, making it more listenable and perhaps vaguely coherent with Man’s Ruin Records' traditional line, closer to stoner than death metal.
"D.A.M.N" is strange, it's a cult object: the recording quality is very raw and despite this, the sound is overall more amplified, it almost seems like at any moment the speakers could explode despite the volumes being low. Moreover, there are only 2 tracks recorded, captivating and endless, in which it's extremely difficult to distinguish the 9 pieces from each other (as indicated on the cover).
With this album, I definitively closed the death metal chapter, which had led me to appreciate the music of bands like Terrorizer, Morbid Angel, Entombed, Dismember, or Impaled Nazarene. Thanks to an old friend I met after a long time on New Year's and the mutual exchange of old memories, the urge came back to listen to this genre for a moment, and I couldn't resist the temptation to shake up the content of de-baser a bit, which had recently become more of a living room than a garage. Additionally, an extreme heavy metal review was missing—someone would have done it in my place sooner or later.
