The Profile

GPS is a progressive rock group formed in 2006 by John Payne (vocals, bass), Guthrie Govan (guitar), and Jay Schellen (drums) after their split from Asia; Ryo Okumoto contributed keyboards. They released Window to the Soul and issued live recordings from Japan.

GPS stands for Govan–Payne–Schellen. Formed post-Asia split in 2006, they pursued a progressive rock direction with virtuosic guitar and busy keyboards; Payne later toured as Asia featuring John Payne. Guthrie Govan later co-founded The Aristocrats.

Two reviews focus on GPS’s 2006 debut, praising the musicianship—especially Guthrie Govan—and the prog direction away from Asia’s formula. One hails it as fresh, heavy, and melodic; the other finds the songs conventional but spotlighting Govan’s standout playing. Payne’s rougher vocals and Okumoto’s busy keys are noted. GPS is framed as a short-lived project born from Asia’s lineup split.
