After ILL BiLL, Sabac Red, Mr. Hyde, and Necro, there is a new release from Psychological Records: "The Art Of Dying" by Goretex, a member of that group of geniuses known as Non Phixion. Goretex, who grew up in NY in the "renowned" Glenwood Projects, had already gained attention with a beautiful 12", "Hated/New America", and, together with ILL BiLL and company, for the brilliant 2002 debut, "The Future Is Now".
Now things have changed, the money has arrived, Non Phixion has their own label, and the same goes for Necro, who had announced, at the beginning of 2004, the release of 10 albums in a year for his label, the aforementioned Psychological. And, aside from "The Pre-Fix For Death" by Necro himself, the other works didn't seem to shine much: lackluster beats and MCs not at their best seemed more the result of a clever commercial operation, and longtime fans of the New York crew began to raise their eyebrows.
The same, unfortunately, can be said for this "The Art Of Dying": not that it's a bad album, mind you, but of the 19 tracks, there are few moments that make the listener jump, such as the title track and the excellent "Celebrity Roast". For the rest, it's an average album, leaving a bitter taste, and the only positive note is perhaps a certain homogeneity of the sound (all beats are produced by Necro), but Goretex and Non Phixion have accustomed us to much higher standards. Of course, there is still hope for future releases from Psychological, but for now, we have to settle for another album that's as anticipated as it is disappointing, which will please the group's "new" supporters, but not the old aficionados and all those who had hailed "The Future Is Now" as a masterpiece.
