"Shot Shot". The first track of "In Our Gun" makes you understand exactly what will be the common thread of all Gomez's work: a electro-brit riff with some psychedelic shades, suitable for refined tastes indeed. Following comes "Rex Kramer" which departs a bit from the style of "Shot Shot" winking at the old sound of "Liquid Skin", where Paul Blackburn's voice resembles (as later in all the other tracks) eerily that of Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam). One after another follow "Detroit Swing 60", original and with a truly overwhelming bass and the eponymous "In Our Gun", heartbreaking with Tom Gray's voice disarming you of every thought until reaching the "break" of the track where Gomez places a one-way guitar riff and numerous electro-sounds with a dub timbre, almost to make the listener understand that nothing is taken for granted in their pieces, that nothing should be taken for granted.
Track no. 5 "Even Song", an epochal song in which Paul shifts his vocal timbre a bit making it softer, making the track a beautiful ballad still nuanced with electronic shades, it's pleasant to notice how Paul and Tom hand over the baton regarding vocals in the tracks throughout the album, making the record more pleasant to listen to; indeed, right after "Even Song" comes "Ruff Stuff" the only song with a 100% brit style barely touched by electronics, perfectly suited to Tom's gentle voice. Before track 8 "Army Dub" a stunning dub piece that brands "In Our Gun" as one of the best albums in indie history, there's the melancholic "Sound Of Sound" that relaxes the listener a bit from the sudden accelerations of the previous tracks. But we arrive at the best track of the record: "Army Dub", perfect, I don't need to dwell too much on this song, melodic perfection and an unobtrusive but effective effects work that doesn't disturb at all. The rest of the album flows smoothly, I leave it to those who have never listened to this masterpiece to give a good description of the last tracks...
Eclectic, unique, the Gomez are this and much more; one of the most underrated bands of the '90s and the new century, creators of one of the most beautiful albums of all time, namely "In Our Gun".
In the "anarchic republic" of Gomez, everything works perfectly, even in the contamination of genres.
The Gomez continue on their interpretative path, broadening the horizons of pop rock and delivering emotions, feelings, through a harmonious ensemble of voices that make you dream.
