Italian poet and patriot (1827–1849), author of the lyrics to "Il Canto degli Italiani" (commonly known as "Fratelli D'Italia").

Wrote the lyrics to the Italian national anthem in 1847 at age 20; the words were set to music by Michele Novaro. Participated in the 1849 Roman Republic and died from wounds sustained in the conflict.

A single DeBaser review celebrates Mameli's youthful authorship of the words to Fratelli D'Italia. The review highlights the anthem's simple, incisive melody and strong patriotic resonance. References tie the anthem to contemporary sporting pride and national unity.

For:Readers interested in Italian history, national anthems, patriotic poetry and 19th-century Italian culture.

The story goes that in 1847, a very young (just twenty-year-old) Goffredo Mameli, wrote in full patriotic fervor the words to what many will consider a simple "march".
