THE REVIEW

In a scene already occupied by groups like Blondie or Runaways, the Go-Go's burst onto the scene in the late seventies and early eighties.

Quintet of Californian "bad girls" formed in 1979 in Los Angeles, the Go-Go's were the first all-female independent group to reach the top of the sales charts in the United States with the album "Beauty and the Beat". They certainly earned their place in rock history.

If in a hypothetical mixer you could blend beat, surf, pop, punk, rock, and new wave well, one of the results you would get (depending on the proportions, of course) is undoubtedly an album like "Beauty and the Beat".

This work includes catchy choruses and jingle jangle ("How much more" or "Can't stop the World"), lighthearted punk 'n' roll ("Skidmarks on my heart"), crystalline melodies ("Lust to Love" or "Fading fast") and perfect FM hits ("Our Lips are sealed").

For me, it's four stars because they might be teenage tunes (Scaruffi "docet"), but they have a killer drive. And also because in the eighties, while many were drooling over Samantha Fox, I fell for Belinda Carlisle.

As the first all-female independent band to top US charts, they earned their place in rock history with memorable tracks and a killer drive.  The Go-Go’s sound bad, really bad, in the best tradition of the genre.

‘Beauty and the Beat’ will be the only number 1 in the history of the American discography for an all-female band writing their own pieces.
